After the fire, new growth

A few months ago a grass fire roared through the canyons and into the hills surrounding my house. We were evacuated as smoke filled the neighborhood. This morning as I walked on the hills, the greening of the hillside is evidence, amidst the charred yucca and singed pine trees, of nature’s resilience. Wildflowers are releasing their scent to the breezes of spring.

I am reminded of how wildfires may burn through our lives in the form: of the death of a loved one, a difficult diagnosis, a relationship break-up, a job loss, and bankruptcy or an investment tragedy. These events may leave us feeling completely consumed and uncertain. It is at these times, when we have to trust in the midst of our doubts, that observing and listening for the rhythms of nature can nurture us. Although we may feel burned by these life events; it is after the fire that seeds of change are released. We have an opportunity to plant what truly nurtures us and create life anew.
